v3.2

Date: October 1929 (from opening caption). The events of this episode surround the Wall Street crash of late October. Since James invests Rose's money in shares, presumably the episode starts before there was any sign of trouble on the stock markets.

Robert Stockbridge background: He has an aunt called Lady Isobel Dawson (1'06"). He is away from Georgina for another 168 days (13'28") – so he returns April-time 1930.

James' favourite dessert, Spotted Dick, is a heavy-ish sponge pudding dotted with dried fruits such as currents and raisins (4'01").

Elizabeth background: James stayed with her for at least a month during his time in the US. Her husband, Dana, is now a director of Goldman Sachs. Elizabeth is very active in society and entertains a great deal. Dana works on Wall Street, so we presume he and Elizabeth still live in New York. However they now have a gazebo (under which they hide their booze!), so they seem to have moved on from the apartment they occupied at the time of Disillusion.

Goof: Simon Williams: "It's the gold at the end of the rainbrow." (rainbow) (7'17")

Goof: At 7'51", Pippa Page (Mary) can be seen stationary in the background, outside the doors to the servants' dining room, waiting for her cue to bring in the tray of drinks.

At 9' Hudson denounces betting on the horses to Edward and Daisy. This is odd as he was seen betting on the St Leger in Word of Honour, but earlier still, in Your Obedient Servant was also denouncing it. (Thanks to Neil Gray for sending this one in.)

Ruby background: Her mother lives in Barnsley (see also Word of Honour and The Nine Days Wonder).

Goof?: Here Georgina drinks whisky (James pours her at least a quintuple measure at 11'35"), but in Will Ye No Come Back Again, she "hated" it.

James background: Whilst in the US, he had a short-term relationship with a woman whom he rescued from a riot in Phoenix. She was the widow of a "Mexican nobleman" who had died a couple of years beforehand. She had a son called Manuelo.

Goof: We briefly see James' old army uniform at 17'54". However, the medal ribbons on it do not match with those seen in the series previously (see near the start of On With the Dance, for example).

The record that James plays on his new gramophone at 18'08" is Dixie by Fred Elizalde and his "Hot" Music, featuring Adrian Rollini on bass sax. It was recorded in January 1928. (Thanks to David Hayes for the information.)

The music James plays on his gramophone after the argument with his father (30'25") is from Wagner's Die Meistersinger Von Nürnberg.

Goof: The gramophone that is seen being installed in James' room at 17', seems to be missing in the later scenes at 35' and 39'.

Goof: At 36'28", during the exchange between James and Georgina, James says "believe me you". Surely, it's "believe you me"? (Thanks to Alan Newton-French, who spotted this one.)

This is Simon Williams' (James') last episode.
