v3.2

Date: Summer 1930 (from opening caption). Georgina's and Robert's wedding is on 12th June – the events of this episode presumably occur several weeks either side of this date. Note that the previous episode said Robert would return in April (but he may have changed plans slightly).

Goof: Here, at 4'17", Hudson once again has a sister in Hastings (see The Understudy) – is this the same sister who was living in Folkestone at the time of Why is Her Door Locked? He is also said to have a brother-in-law in Whom God hath Joined... which implies another(? the same?) sister/s.

Goof: It is mentioned that there are "over two million" out of work (7'27"). The Times of June 4th gives the number as 1,770,100 (as of May 26th).

Goof?: Daisy comes into Georgina's bedroom (with her breakfast) from the left-hand-side door (8'30" & 21'08). Previously (see The Nine Days Wonder), this seemed to lead to a bathroom.

Rooms: For this episode, the front door now has the hinges on the right-hand side (as we look towards the street) (8'47").

Rose background: She went to the village school at Southwold (30'54").

Goof?: Does Mrs Bridges' cake (32'02") really contain 16lbs (!) of currents (as she says at 25'47")?

Location scenes were shot in Eaton Place for this episode as an OB, and in Seaford House in Belgrave Square for the scenes of Georgina's wedding reception. During the latter, we see both the Duchess of Buckminster (Robert's mother) and Alice Hamilton as part of the wedding group, but neither speak.

Goof: At 38'31" Richard toasts the marriage of Hudson and Mrs Bridges. Angela Baddeley immediately responds: "Thank you m'lady". I'll warrant I can see the mistake reflected in Angela B's face, too. (Thanks to Tony Murray for this one.)

Mrs Bridges background: At least as late as the war, Mrs Bridges had a sister and brother-in-law living in Great Yarmouth (38'57"). This may, or may not be the same sister as mentioned in What the Footman Saw. See also Why is Her Door Locked?

Goof: When the chesterfield sofa is seen been carried out of 165 at 49'15", it has lost its usual black base (see, for example, at 37'21" – this was added to it to make it a better height for the cameras).

As Rose wanders through the empty house, we hear audio extracts from old episodes. These include the voices of departed cast members, Pauline Collins, Karen Dotrice, Rachel Gurney and Simon Williams.

The break up of the household:

The house is to be sold and probably turned into several flats. Most of its contents will be auctioned to pay off James' debts.

Georgina (now the Marchioness of Stockbridge) and Robert are going to live in a house on Robert's family's estate. Edward is going with them as their butler, and Daisy as head houseparlourmaid. (A series of further stories of Georgina and Robert was mooted as an idea for a spin-off show.)

Mr Hudson and Mrs Bridges (now Mrs Hudson) will go and run a children's guest house in Hastings, left to Hudson by his deceased sister. They take Ruby with them as general help (which Mrs Bridges regards as a gesture of "Christian charity"). (This scenario probably would have been developed into a TV series had it not been for the death of Angela Baddeley in February 1976.)

Richard has resigned from his post as Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and will retire to Dorset with Virginia and her children Alice and William in order to write his memoirs. They take Rose with them.

At just over 55 minutes long, this is the longest episode. It was the last episode shown of Upstairs, Downstairs, but The Understudy, Noblesse Oblige and Will Ye No Come Back Again were all made after Whither Shall I Wander?
