Errata
Inside Updown - The Story of
Upstairs, Downstairs

by Richard Marson

I was privileged to help Richard out with the latter stages of his great book on the series, where I proof-checked the whole final manuscript and double-checked as much of the factual content of the text as possible. Nevertheless, as with any work of this size, a (very) few slips managed to escape us both. Here is a list of all the ones noticed to date from the first, hardcover, edition - most of which have now been corrected. The entries shown in white are errata in the second, softcover, edition (i.e. the one currently available). Please get in touch if you have any other corrections to add to this.

NB: Printing of the book has varied in the way it is paginated, so the references on the left are very approximate!

p17, paragraph 7 Stella Richmond
   should read:
Stella Richman
p60, footnote 1 THE ONEDIN LINE (BBC 1971-1980)
  should read:
THE ONEDIN LINE (BBC 1970-1980)
p80, paragraph 7 The correct third line of the song is:
When he goes a-strolling in the park,
p194, last paragraph WHAT THE FOOTMAN SAW cannot have been intended to be transmitted directly after THE BOLTER as the former is clearly stated to be set after Christmas (and GOODWILL TO ALL MEN).
p197, paragraph 6 DISTANT THUNDER was, in fact, shown as part of LWT's 21st anniversary in 1989. The episode chosen as a tribute to Gordon Jackson in 1990 was A CHANGE OF SCENE.
p208, footnote 3 ("See Chapter Eleven...") Delete this footnote.
p208, Studio days for a house divided Footnote: The slate at the start of the master videotape for this episode indicates it was recorded "4򉼳3" (i.e. June 4th instead of July 4th). This seems to be a mistake made whilst writing out the slate.
p225, paragraph 4 Barmsbury Square
   should read:
Barnsbury Square
p255, Studio days for home fires It seems likely that the studio days for home fires were, in fact 27th and 28th June 1974.
p270, paragraph 6 ("The location was...") Wester Cross
   should read:
Wester Ross
p273, paragraph 7 ("That was a story...") This paragraph should be a block quote.
p288, footnote In fact the documentary was issued on A&E's video label, not PBS'.
p304, last paragraph The "running out of petrol" scene actually occurs at the beginning of the next episode, THE BITERS BIT. The last shot of THE SILVER GHOST shows the car happily speeding along a country lane.
p309, THERE IS A HAPPY LAND cast list and footnote Mia Nadasi (Janine)
   should read:
Mia Nadasi (Juli)

The character is, in fact, only called "Janine" in the TV TIMES and not on the end credits of the episode.
