v3.0

Date: It is May 1910 (Edward VII died on 6th May).

Goof: Angela Baddeley: "She couldn't not marry him anyway. Not while she's still married to Mr Kirbridge." (she used an extra "not") (4'26")

Lady Prudence background: Her daughter Agatha is soon to be married (to Clive) (5'49"). Lady Prudence's husband is called Archie (47'39") – this must be her second (or later) husband as she was described as a widow in A Suitable Marriage.

Sarah background / Thomas background: Both Richard (20'13") and James (43'44") claim that Thomas and Sarah are married, but note that the pair themselves never make this claim (the assumption made in the spin-off series, Thomas & Sarah, is that they never got married). Sarah's baby is due "next month" (June) (42'58").

Lady Marjorie background / goof: Her birthday is on May 6th (29'24") (cf. Desirous of Change for a goof involving this date).

Rooms / goof: Hudson enters his pantry from the right-hand-side door (46'59") as in An Object of Value (not from the left as in Your Obedient Servant and A Special Mischief). This way of entering the room is generally used from now on.

This was the last appearance in Upstairs, Downstairs of both Sarah (Pauline Collins) and Thomas (John Alderton), though they had their own spin-off series, Thomas & Sarah (q.v.), some years later.

Though not intentional, this was also the last episode for Elizabeth. Actress Nicola Pagett refused to return for Season Three after she learned she had not been selected to appear in a proposed, but never made feature film of UpDown. Full details of this film, including the complete script, can be found in the 2011 edition (but not the previous editions) of Richard Marson's Inside UpDown book.

Phyllis was intended to be a permanent character (as James' wife), but plans for Season Three changed markedly before production commenced and she was written out.

"We stay on the faces of James and Phyllis and Elizabeth. They are all three staring, deep in thought, into the hazy unpredictable future..." With Sarah, Thomas and Elizabeth gone and with Lady Marjorie only present in one more episode after this, the close of Season Two well and truly marked the end of the first era of Upstairs, Downstairs.
