v3.2

Date: It is mentioned that it is February (1910) at 27'04".

Karekin background: His father was an Armenian carpet merchant (7'50").

Lady Marjorie background: When she first met Richard (in Paris), he had a dreadful common girlfriend called Yvonne (25'37"). Her family home, Southwold, is in Wiltshire (16'25"). The Southwold family bought the lease of 165 Eaton Place in 1872. Her brother Hugo was called Lord Ashby before he became the new Lord Southwold (an earl) on the death of his father. Lady Marjorie's part of her father's estate was effectively given to her earlier as part of her marriage settlement. This money is held in trust for her offspring to inherit on her death; she can, however, live off the interest during her lifetime. To clear some of the new Lord Southwold's debts, Sir Geoffrey is required to sell off the remaining lease (60-odd years) on 165 (worth about £5600). (16'). During this episode, Karekin buys the lease and makes it over as a gift to Elizabeth. Elizabeth then gives it to her parents, thus solving the problem of them having to leave 165. During a later episode (A House Divided), we learn that the amount of the marriage settlement was £100,000 (about £8,600,000 in modern terms) and that James and Elizabeth inherit this in equal 50/50 parts.

There is talk of a nanny (21'58") presumably to replace Nanny Webster (see Out of the Everywhere). However, we never see the new nanny in this or any other episode.

Elizabeth background: She is now 23 years old (22'05"). She had a great-aunt called Mary, now dead (2'47").

Goof?: Elizabeth turned 21 in winter 1908 (see The Key of the Door), so in this episode she should be 22, not 23 as stated (22'05"). In other words, the writers/producers are calculating Elizabeth's age as if the year turned back at the start of this season had not happened.

All currently distributed UK copies of this episode (including DVD releases, and all repeats) omit three lines of dialogue at 44'11" during the conversation between Elizabeth and Karekin in the back of the shop. The missing portion survives on older US copies. The full scene is as follows (missing lines are in red):

Elizabeth: If you'd heard the things she said about you. She doesn't even know you.
Karekin: It's quite, quite usual.
Elizabeth: Well it shouldn't be! Why are people always so beastly?
Karekin: About people like me? It's quite understandable.
Elizabeth: No it isn't. It isn't in the least understandable. Don't be so reasonable!
Karekin: But I am reasonable! People like your mother – all her class of persons – they are frightened.
