v3.2

Date: Summer 1928 (from opening caption).

Nigel Havers is a very familiar face on British television. He started in the early 1970s playing small roles in (mostly) period dramas (as here in UpDown). He gradually moved onto bigger roles and finally became well known when he took the lead role in A Horseman Riding By in 1978. His best-remembered role is probably as con man and expert seducer Ralph Gorse in The Charmer (1987). He also made many episodes of Don't Wait Up (1983-90), a sitcom about a father-and-son doctors' practice. Havers was married to Polly Williams (sister of Simon, who plays James) who sadly died in 2004.

Goof: Lady Dolly starts off looking for the parlourmaid's cap by opening the oven! Why would it be in there? (2'45")

The song that Georgina and Co. are dancing to at 4'05" is called Miss Annabelle Lee (Who's Wonderful, Who's Marvellous), written in 1927 by Sidney Clare, Lew Pollack and Harry Richman.

Goof: The champagne, though freshly uncorked, seems to be flat (6'20").

Goof: Edward: "I don't think His Lordship would like me... anyone but me to drive the car," (10'36"). (Thanks to Tony Murray for this goof.)

Virginia background: She can drive (11'09").

Georgina background: Georgina can drive, too, but only by having observed others (there was no driving test until 1934).

Standing in for Sussex, the film sequences for this episode were shot in the area around the villages Red Rice and Middle Wallop, near Andover, in Hampshire. At 22'42", Edward is told to collect the Bellamy car from Little Parham. This is a fictional name but is within bus distance from (the real) East Grinstead.

The first song that it being sung in the car as it speeds along is That's My Weakness Now, written in 1928 by Bud Green and Sam H Stept. The second song is Ain't She Sweet, written in 1927 by Jack Yellen and Milton Ager. Many years on, the latter song was covered by the Beatles.

Goof: When we see the close-ups (13'05" & 14'20") of the bicycle squashed under the wheels of the car, the car appears to be at right angles to the edge of the road, with its rear wheels on the grass verge. All other shots show the car stopped parallel to the verge.

The "End of Part One" (13'24") and "Part Two" captions (13'29") are shot on film for this episode (rather than done on video in the studio, as normal). The only other time this occurred was for Home Fires.

Robert Stockbridge background: He is the eldest son of the Duke of Buckminster and heir to the title. His full set of forenames is Robert Charles Algernon St John. He is the Marquis of Stockbridge (presumably one of his father's lesser titles, adopted by courtesy).
