v3.2

This is the first of the five black-and-white episodes.

Date: June 1904 (from opening caption).

Anton Rodgers (Scone) is probably best known to modern viewers from his later TV comedies Fresh Fields (1984-6, and its follow-up French Fields, 1989-91) and May To December (1989-94). He also appeared in the Thomas & Sarah episode, Love Into Three Won't Go. Also, recommended to fans of UpDown, is LWT's Lillie (1978) in which Rodgers played Edward Langtry, drunken husband of Lillie. Rodgers died in 2007.

Goof: In the first scene, we get various views of a clock on the mantelpiece which shows the time as 11.05 but doesn't change over the course of this long scene. The clock does work because we see it later in the episode (22'10") showing a different time. (Clocks on TV shows and films are often not set to run as this decreases the possibility of continuity errors due to different takes and editing etc.) (Thanks to Tony Murray for this contribution.)

Goof?: Sarah briefly puts on her maid's cap on top of her outdoor hat. Deliberate? (11'10")

Goof: When Pauline Collins gets undressed, she starts to unbutton her bodice top. She realises this would leave her topless for the whole scene so quickly abandons the idea and starts on her stockings instead! (17'12")

Goof?: When Sarah comes in to draw the curtains and turn on the lights, they are already lit. Or is she just turning them up? (22'14")

Rooms: There is mention of a back staircase here, but in many episodes the staff seem to use the main staircase instead.

Richard background: Bellamy is a (Conservative) junior minister and a member of the Committee for Imperial Defence.

For the black-and-white episodes (bar Board Wages), the closing captions have "squiggles" on three corners of the screen – two was more usual once the series became established.
