v3.3

Date: It seems to be colder now (fires, overcoats) and it is dark by 6.20 p.m. (28'09"). It is some time before Christmas (46'58"). In the next episode (mid-December), Elizabeth is three months pregnant, dating this episode to mid-September 1908.

All currently distributed copies of this episode (including UK/US DVD releases, and all repeats) omit the initial lines of dialogue directly after the opening credits at 0'25". Originally the scene started as follows (missing lines are in red):

Rose: Have you finished that brushing, Thomas?
Thomas: Yes, yes, just about.
Rose: Don’t forget to iron these.
Thomas: These? What’s these?
Rose: Boot laces, silly. What did you think they was – liquorice?

Thomas background: He is from Abergavenny in south Wales (4'47"), but cf. with the Thomas & Sarah episodes Made In Heaven and Return To Gethyn.

Goof: You can hear the gallery cue Jean Marsh (5'49").

Goof?: The Capi de Monte porcelain bust moves between tables in the bedroom over the duration of breakfast (but Elizabeth may have moved it) (13').

Rose background: She has/had an aunt and uncle (16'08"). An aunt is also mentioned in For Love of Love and The Wages of Sin.

Alongside Robert Hardy in Season Five, Charles Gray was probably the biggest guest star to grace Upstairs, Downstairs. He is probably best remembered for playing Blofeld in the 1971 Bond film Diamonds Are Forever, and for tutoring us through The Time Warp in The Rocky Horror Picture Show in 1975. He died in 2000.

The location work for the car-driving sequences was done in the Hampstead Ponds area of Hampstead Heath in north London.

Goof: Thomas' scarf changes colour from green to dark grey as he and Elizabeth arrive back at Greenwich (33'08").

Goof: Elizabeth enters her house without a handbag but then one appears in the indoor scenes (33'28").

Goof: Thomas spills some water from the pot when lighting the pot warmer (34'20") (Thanks to Tony Murray for this one.)

Goof: Jean Marsh: "It's half past five... half past one. I've got to get up at half past five." (48'37")

Goof: At 49'38", Thomas' undone tie hangs loosely down his chest. However, as he walks into the next room, the tie is lodged behind his braces. (Yet another thanks to Tony Murray.)
