v3.2

This episode is the first to be directed by Simon Langton, son of David Langton (who played Richard).

Date: May 1926 (from opening caption). The episode opens on the evening of Saturday 1st May and finishes on the afternoon of Wednesday 12th May.

Ruby background / goof?: Her (paternal) Uncle Len is a miner. There are constant references throughout this episode to her uncle being from Barnsley. Word of Honour said Ruby came from Bradford. It is difficult to know whether this discrepancy is a mistake, or parts of the family simply live in different places (see also All the King's Horses).

I am not clear why Hudson is given the line: "That's not Mr Baldwin!" when the prime-minister's statement comes on the wireless (4'01").

For this episode, the usual leather Chesterfield sofa has been replaced by one with a floral pattern.

Lady Prudence background: She has cousins in Wales (4'43").

Goof: Daisy's cap comes off as she tends to the wounded Edward (11'11").

Goof: The left-hand door of Georgina's bedroom clearly leads to an en-suite bathroom (12'46"). Compare with Whither Shall I Wander?

Goof: An edit in the action causes Georgina's hand to suddenly jump up to her face (12'56").

The location work for this episode, mostly involving the double-decker bus, started in Eaton Place and then moved to Whittlesey Street and Theed Street SE1 which were just five minutes from the LWT headquarters on the South Bank. The bus used is the same vehicle as seen in Women shall not Weep.

There is a small cut in most modern copies of this episode at 17'26" of around three seconds of James and Frederick in the bus. Instead, James' line: "Hey – here's some more customers," has been laid over the next shot (of the old man hailing the bus). The cut appears to be to remove some picture disturbance on the original. Older copies (e.g. the US A&E DVDs) do not have this alteration.

Goofs: As James and Andrew Bouverie enter 165 after leaving their bus there are quite a few continuity errors. James is wearing leather gloves as he goes up to the door, but is carrying them as he enters the hallway. Bouverie takes off his hat as he walks up to the door but removes it again as he enters the hallway – he also wears the strap of his bag differently in the outdoor scenes versus the studio. Both men's coats are suddenly unbuttoned as they enter the hall. (20')

Goof: The men that confront James and Frederick whilst en route in the bus stand in a different order in the ground-level shots versus the shots from the top of the bus (see the man with the red scarf, for instance) (25'14").

Goof: Roy Pattison: "Plenty of workers are fighting with us, though. Different... you know... workers in different occupations." (32'57")

Goof: As the two miners walk away from 165 Eaton Place, they pass by number 159; the digit "1" has been sloppily applied to the column (47'34"). (The property in question was actually number 59 and the "1" was added by LWT.) (Thanks to Tony Murray for spotting this.)
