v3.1

Date: Summer 1929 (from opening caption). The episode opens on June 4th (Founder's Day at Eton, resignation of Baldwin) and closes on June 18th (end of the first Test).

The song heard on the radio at 0'35" is What Is This Thing Called Love? from 1929, written by Cole Porter.

Robert Stockbridge background: He went to Eton (public school), then to Oxford University. However he left after a year or so and didn't complete his degree. He is keen on cricket, painting and forestry. His has no brothers or sisters. An uncle (on his mother's side) was in the Life Guards with James, but was killed.

Goof: Mrs Bridges says that she sent Ruby upstairs over an hour ago to fetch her spectacles. We then see Ruby come rushing in from the kitchen (not down the stairs from upstairs), which is where Mrs Bridges came in from a few minutes ago. (2'58")

Goof: Mrs Bridges isn't wearing her spectacles but seconds later suddenly has them on. She could have put them on, but would have to have been very quick, so I think this is probably a continuity error. (3'44")

Goof: Watch as Robert bowls the orange towards Georgina. The glass on the table next to him changes position, and the bottle of wine changes orientation. The orange he picked out to bowl also magically reappears in the fruit bowl. (6'32") (Thanks to Arne Andersen for this one.)

Goof: The painted hall backdrop (see also Will Ye No Come Back Again) is seen again (15'20").

The song Mabel is squawking is I Can't Give You Anything But My Love Baby (music: Jimmy McHugh / lyrics: Dorothy Fields) from 1928.

Goof: Robert barges into Georgina's room without knocking. A gentleman would surely not do this – she might have been standing around naked! Or is the writer trying to suggest that Robert has already seen/handled the goods, so to speak? (30'30")

Mrs Waddilove is played by the late Joan Sanderson. Where have you seen her before? She was the deaf harridan Mrs Richards in the classic Communication Problems episode of Fawlty Towers in 1979. Earlier, she had appeared in the first two seasons (1968-9) of Please Sir! – a school-based sitcom – alongside John Alderton. She died in 1992.

Georgina background: Her father (see Goodwill to All Men) was a captain (it is not said whether he was in the army or navy). He was a "cad and a bounder". (37'19")

The report on the end of the first Test match is accurate.
