v3.1

The taping of this episode was on New Year's Day 1971, which seems a little harsh of LWT!

Date: May 1905 (from opening caption).

Goof: George Innes drops an item of cutlery (1'23").

Mr Hudson background: Hudson's mother is still alive but "she is a good age".

Rooms: The kitchen sink is shown to be against the usual "fourth wall" of the kitchen (i.e. the wall us viewers usually look in from, opposite the stairs up to the hall) (2'52") (cf. Why is Her Door Locked? where the sink moves to the left-hand wall).

First appearance of Elizabeth Bellamy, played by Nicola Pagett (3'03").

Elizabeth background: She can play the piano. She is 17 years old.

Goof?: A friend of James' from the army, Lieutenant Billy Watson, appears, played by John Quayle. In Season Three's A Change of Scene, an almost identical character, Bunny Newbury is introduced, also played by Quayle. Presumably this is a slip up and they are intended to be the same character?

Lady Marjorie background: The widowed Lady (Kate) Castleton is Lady Marjorie's aunt. Goodwill to All Men refines this to great-aunt.

Margaretta Scott (Aunt Kate) is best known for her portrayal of Mrs Pumphrey, the rich owner of pampered poodle Tricky Woo in the veterinary drama All Creatures Great And Small (1978-90). Much earlier in her career, she had notably featured in the first ever Shakespeare production on BBC television when she took part in an 11-minute extract from As You Like It screened on 5/2/37, playing Rosalind. The crew of Upstairs, Downstairs found her difficult to work with. She died in 2005.

Goof: At 6'43", Rose accidentally drops Elizabeth's gloves as she takes them to the dresser. (Tony Murray sent this one in.)

Goof: Both Rachel Gurney (Lady Marjorie) and Simon Williams (James) seem to repeatedly step on a loose stair rod at 16'.

James background: He implies he is at Sandhurst (army training school for officers) (17'10"). His rank is lieutenant.

Rooms: An electric light switch is visible in Elizabeth's bedroom (18'25") and, later, near the door down to the servants' hall (48'47"). The latter was not present in Board Wages, so we assume the house has been (partially?) converted to electricity since that episode.

Goof: David Langton: "Rose wants to get on with your hair. You look like you've been dragged through a hair... hedge backwards." (18'41")

Goof: The way Madame Dubious is measuring Elizabeth's hips is likely to result in an inaccurate dress size! (22'42")

The song that James and Elizabeth dance to at 24'24" is (the chorus of) Ta-ra-ra Boom-de-ay, a music-hall song dating from the 1890s. The authorship is unclear.

Rooms: We see Hudson's pantry(?), but not details of where in the basement it is (25').

Jessica Benton (Lady Cynthia Cartwright) is probably best known for playing Elizabeth Frazer in the 1800's seafaring drama The Onedin Line (1970-80) She also appeared in the Thomas & Sarah episode, Birds Of A Feather.

Goof: Richard is dozing alone in the morning room, but a shadow falls across him (41'08").
