v3.1

Date: December 1905 (from opening caption), quite close to Christmas.

Rooms: The light switch near the door down to the servants' hall (shown in The Path of Duty) has vanished. And, no, this wasn't because of out-of-order recording – the five black-and-white episodes were recorded in the order transmitted.

Lady Marjorie background: She can play the piano.

The tune Lady Marjorie is playing on the piano at 2'33" is Schubert's song Das Wandern, transcribed by Liszt. (Thanks to Nikhil for this.)

Alfred calls Hudson "Soap Suds". There was a popular brand of soap at that time called Hudsons.

Rooms: We learn that the dining room is against the right-hand wall of the house (as we look towards the street). The dining room also has a door on its own far side, indicating the house stretches rather a long way in that direction! The geography of the rooms of 165, as shown in the studio, was nearly always inappropriate for the narrow houses in that part of Belgravia.

Goof: Gordon Jackson bangs his tray on the door as he carries it out (4'32").

The first appearance of Lady Prudence, played by Joan Benham (7'49").

Lady Prudence background: She has a daughter called Agatha who seems to be about the same age as Elizabeth (see also For Love of Love) (8'05"). Lady Prudence is referred to as "the most eligible widow in London" (43'45").

Horst Janson (Baron von Rimmer) was (and is) a famous German actor. He was cast by director Joan Kemp-Welch after she had seen some of his work whilst in Germany.

Goof: Somebody hasn't done the cleaning very well – that mirror has loads of fingerprints on it! (17'38")

A few years previously, Gillian Hills (The Salesgirl) had the distinction to have provided the first full-frontal nude scene in mainstream English-language cinema, in the film Blow-Up (1966).

Richard background: He is a clergyman's son and is dependent on Lady Marjorie's family financially. The Liberals are now in power, so he is no longer the Under Secretary of State for the Admiralty, but remains on the Committee for Imperial Defence.

Goof: Nicola Pagett trips badly on yet another loose stair rod. This causes David Langton to start, but the scene carries on nevertheless. (38'39")

Goof: Would Rose really crash into the Baron's room without knocking? (41'06") (Thanks to Arne Andersen for sending this one in.)

Goof: Once again, Rose uses the main front stairs where the servants' backstairs would have been used in reality (41'25").

Goof: Nicola Pagett: "I invite the Baron, here and now, to return to us in Ger... in January." (43'48")

Goof: As Elizabeth exits the dining room in search of the Baron, we hear a clock begin to strike, but it gets abruptly cut off (48'50").

Goof: Would Elizabeth really crash into the Baron's room without knocking? (49'02")

Alfred the footman, who leaves in this story, later returns to Eaton Place in Rose's Pigeon in the third season – a sort of sequel to this episode.
