v3.0

Date: September 1926 (from opening caption). The opening of the episode sees a dinner party being arranged for "Friday week – the 16th" (see also goof below).

Goof: The first time David Langton pronounces the name Fleuriau, he says something which sounds like "Feugo" (0'57").

Goof: There was no Friday the 16th in September 1926 (0'59").

William background: He is now at Eton (public school) (1'52").

The menu for the evening is:

Mock turtle soup
Filet de sole à la Colbert
Oyster vol-au-vents
Saddle of lamb, pommes purée (mashed potato), cauliflower and onion sauce
Partridge with salad
Sorbet
Peach Melba with meringues
Apricot soufflé

The drinks:

Cocktails
Amontillado sherry
Moët et Chandon Brut Impérial Champagne
Château Latour 1906
Trockenbeerenauslese (a hideously sweet dessert wine)
Port

A reader notes: "You would never serve a trock with the sorbet course. It would be served only by itself at the end, or with a dessert course, and then it would need to be carefully matched. I do, however, know of one continental gentleman restaurateur who would pair that (or a Tokaji Aszu) with the odd main course, but that's fairly rare."

Rooms: Hudson's bedroom is seen to connect with the left-hand side of his pantry. An iron staircase can be seen through the window of the bedroom. The panelling on the wall at the head of his bed suggests another staircase lies on the other side.

Goof: Gordon Jackson drops one of the place cards (11'58").

Goofs?: Has 165 joined the Temperance League? James pours himself the tiniest of sherries at 13'14" and the brandy Ruby pours out for Mrs Bridges at 18'11" is just as small.

Anthony Woodruff, who plays the Bellamy family doctor, would later turn up briefly in the Thomas & Sarah episode Made In Heaven.

Goof: Rose takes a hot baking tin from the oven with her bare hands (20'09").

Mr Hudson background: He has a sister in Hastings – is this the same sister who was living in Folkestone at the time of Why is Her Door Locked? He is also said to have a brother-in-law in Whom God hath Joined... which implies another(? the same?) sister/s.

Goof?: It's difficult to see, but James seems to be using a ballpoint pen at 31'07" – these were not yet in general use at this time.
A reader notes: "James is actually writing with a propelling mechanical pencil, which was one of the main writing instruments of the day, apart from a conventional pencil, a dip pen or a fountain pen."

Mr Hudson background / Mrs Bridges background: Charmingly, we learn they have made each other sole beneficiaries in their wills (39'17").

Goof: Gordon Jackson: "Well, there's a little money and a pair of cold cufflinks." (gold) (39'29")

Goof: Hudson's wheelchair gets stuck in the doorway as Rose wheels it out (48'39").
