v3.4

Date: Spring 1922 (from opening caption).

Scenes were shot in and around Eaton Place for this episode, showing Alice walking Thimble the dog, and meeting Bert, the pavement artist.

Goof?: Alice says that Richard gives Bert (the pavement artist) a sovereign (a coin worth £1) every Sunday – that's about £50 in modern terms, which seems a little extravagant (1'14"). In any case, sovereigns were called in at the start of WWI to help pay for the war and to prevent the country's gold getting into foreign hands should the Germans invade; notes were issued instead. (Thanks to Stephen Styles for some of this information.)

Goof: Ruby asks Mrs Bridges how you spell "Hamilton" and gets the reply: "H-A-M-L-I-T-O-N," (2'19"). If not simply a mistake by the actress, this is probably intended to be a little joke by the writer. But it doesn't fit in with Mrs Bridges' character who presumably had a good, if basic education and would not make this sort of mistake.

The book that Alice is reading to William at 7'30" is With Clive In India, Or The Beginnings Of An Empire written by G. A. Henty in 1883, a historical adventure for boys set in the 18th century about the landing of General Robert Clive in India.

Virginia background: She is given a religious streak in this episode – her children say prayers each night, and she had her first son Michael confirmed (into Christianity).

The dog "playing" Thimble was called Danvers and was owned by Simon Williams.

William background / goof: He is eight years old (18'49"). This contradicts his age of six as given in Peace out of Pain (November 1918) – he would now be at least 9½ and possibly as old as 10½.

The poem Alice is seen learning during this episode is Kubla Khan, Or, A Vision In A Dream. A Fragment, written c.1798 by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834).

Rooms: The indicators in the servants' hall show that 165 has a "cloak room", which we never see (21'06").

Ruby background: She says that, by Alice's age, she had run away from the mill she worked in and entered service (31'06").

Goof: Miss Treadwell locks Alice into the schoolroom and we hear her turn a key in the lock. However, the door appears to have no lock. (38'48").

Goof: Look at the writing on the blackboard at 40'48". The same writing appears but (almost) rubbed out earlier at 16'07"!

This is William's last episode.
